| But Shaoguan has a very nice countryside around it, which is interesting to explore, even if you know China. Especially in winter, when the temperatures are quite mild, sometimes even cool, it's great fun to ride your bike. | Die Umgebung Shaoguans ist aber auch attraktiv, wenn man sich schon in China auskennt. Besonders im Winter, wenn die Temperaturen ziemlich angenehm, manchmal sogar kühl sind, macht es Spaß, die Landschaft zu erradeln. |
| Canton is quite densely populated. So, just like in Europe, you're never very far off the next human settlement. At the same time, even if you're just 500m from the next village, the environment may have a wild feel to it. | Kanton ist recht dicht besiedelt. Also ist man wie in Europa selten weit von einer Siedlung entfernt. Trotzdem kann die Umwelt doch einen wilden Eindruck machen, auch wenn man nur 500m vom nächsten Dorf entfernt ist. |

| Due to the economic development, you also come across abandoned houses once in a while. There are also abandoned villages, though I have never seen one. | Aufgrund der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung findet man hier & da auch mal verlassene Häuser. | But I have seen a lot of interesting animals & plants. The first picture of this post is some kind of grass growing wild on many of the hills in that area. | I probably mentioned it before, Cantonese are a rather superstitious people. There are a lot of Buddhist or Taoist shrines & temples. I'm not sure what the above is. If it were bigger, I would have a guessed a grave, because many of the poorer Cantonese's graves are just very small hills. | Ich habe es wahrscheinlich schon erwähnt: Kantonesen sind ein recht abergläubisches Völkchen. Es gibt eine Menge buddhistischer & taoistischer Tempel & Schreine. Was das oben Dargestellte ist, weiß ich nicht. Wäre es größer, hätte ich gedacht, ein Grab, da viele Gräber von ärmeren Kantonesen einfach nur kleine Hügel sind. |

| The good thing about Canton being densely populated is that you have paths & trails pretty much everywhere. As you see above, though, they are not really meant for cycling. &, all too often, they suddenly end in no-man's-land: | Das Gute daran, daß Kanton so dichtbevölkert ist, ist, daß man quasi überall Pfade & Wege findet. Wie man oben sieht, sind diese aber nicht wirklich für Radfahrer gedacht. & nur allzu oft enden sie im Niemandsland: |

| If you're cycling there, you also need to be careful about paths ending at some kind of cliff. There is usually no rail, & not even a warning sign. That can be quite dangerous, if you're going downhill at speed & it's getting dark. But, hey, I'm a careful rider, so nothing happened to me (yet). | Wenn man dort radelt, muß man auch aufpassen, daß der Weg nicht plötzlich an einer Art Kliff endet. Es gibt dann normalerweise kein Geländer & nicht einmal Hinweisschilder. Was natürlich etwas gefährlich sein kann, wenn man schnell bergab fährt & es dunkel wird. Aber ich bin ja ein vorsichtiger Radler, weswegen mir (noch) nichts passiert ist. |

| Or maybe, I was just lucky. I often stayed out too long & that could be quite a problem, because the bike (as is common in China) didn't have any lights & there is of course no lighting at the paths. Then again, being out in the dark you can get lucky & take a nice shot of the city lights: | Oder vielleicht hatte ich nur Glück. Ich war oft zu lange unterwegs & das kann ein Problem sein, wenn das Fahrrad, wie in China üblich, keine Scheinwerfer hat. & die Wege sind natürlich auch nicht beleuchtet.
