When I saw there was a contest for the Best Restaurant of the Year I immediately thought of Pappy's Smokehouse. Now I won't say that BBQ is my favorite food group, but this restaurant serves the best - it was named Best Ribs in America by the Food Network. But it takes more than just good food to be my favorite.
I believe in tradition and values and I love an establishment that is dedicated to both.
This is your first clue that this is a FAMILY backed restaurant. Their greeting to you:
The name of our BBQ joint is a tribute to the late Jim "Pappy" Emerson. He was our brother, uncle, friend and mentor.
Pappy kept things simple. He loved the outdoors and he worked hard. When people came to visit, he tried always to provide an atmosphere for great food and good times. A perfect description of Pappy's Smokehouse today.
Another thing I love about Pappy's is their dedication to veterans. You'll see many tributes to local veterans and signs of appreciation.
They have a wall filled with menus that were signed by local patrons and celebrities.
And they support the community back!
But this IS a restaurant review, so let's get down to talking about the food. The menu is on large chalkboard where you place your order. All their meats are slow-roasted over sweet apple or cherry wood for up to 24 hours.
Here's one of their three smokers outside the front windows, hard at work creating that unique falling-off-the-bone rib experience.
My order was a combination platter of burnt ends and brisket with green beans and sweet potato fries. I've already bragged on the meat, but these are the best sweet potato fries I've ever eaten - crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and sprinkled with a perfect slightly sweet seasoning.
My husband is a rib man all the way, so he has a full rack of baby back ribs along with baked beans and potato salad.
This is what a happy man looks like when he gets to have our anniversary dinner at his favorite rib place!
