Phew... it had been quite a long time since I had been to this museum in Perth! In fact, probably the last time... I was a kid, and I seem to remember that there was a different one across the road that I preferred because it had the skeleton of a HUGE blue whale there... either that, or my memory is playing tricks on me.

Anyway, this was quite a surprise for us... we did come to visit to take the kids out, but to also stay under some cover from the harsh Perth summer sun... which had already given my wife a pretty bad and painful sunburn!

The whole museum was a potpurri of really crazily different things... which made it quite interesting, but also really quite tricky to pin down exactly what it was about. But perhaps that is the best thing... a museum that is a bit of everything for everyone? And if you want something more specific, you can go and visit something that is more specialised?

Near the foyer, there were some indigenous art and stories that were quite interesting... weirdly enough, I knew most of the stories as I am from this area... but my wife, who grew up on the east coast of Australia didn't know them. I often forget how different the two sides of Australia can be!

... it can't be a museum without dinosaurs... somewhere!

... or strange art!

The was a hands-on science section that was funded by the mining companies. Not very big, and tucked away in the corner out of the main drag... you would have to be quite adventurous to stumble across this. But there is a better specialist science museum elsewhere in Perth if you want that sort of thing.

There was a special exhibition when we visited and all the following photos are from this indigenous storytelling exhibition... mostly more modern stories through the medium of film and TV.

... and then it was time to head back out into the light for a short break, overlooking part of the city that I don't normally see. Most of the time, you are looking towards the more scenic river or park side!

... and then onwards to more strange little displays of art and science. A touch of musical history... and then we finished up in the animals section, where there were live snakes and reptiles... and as the last photo, a life size replica of HUGE HUGE spider! EEEEP...

... and that was where our journey through the museum finished up. We had spent a good few hours in the museum and the kids really enjoyed it... so, definitely a recommended spot if you have kids and want to spend some time out of the sun!
