On a pretty rare event, my wife and I were able to spend a night away whilst one of our parents watched the kids... so, a day of travelling and sightseeing, then an overnight stay away from the little ones, and then another day of travelling and sightseeing.

We ended up staying at the The Sir George (okay, that looks weird... but I'm pretty sure that that is the way that is supposed to grammatically work... that...).... and I'm going to split up the stay into two posts... one for the accommodation, and the other for the food as there was more than enough to write about both things!

The hotel has a nice pub-like kitchen and seating area... and it is quite well known in the local area for its good food... even if it is more expensive than what you would find in the regional areas.

The Space

The place has been recently refurbished, so everything looks quite neat and newish... and there is that old country style that is common to the regional areas of Australia.

There is lots of outdoor seating, but we were here in winter... so it was cold and wet outside. I have played here once for a wedding during the spring, and was packed outside, with lots of guests visiting for a Saturday night out.

Finally, a little bar-room... nicely stocked, and tastefully decorated. The only thing that I would like in this area would be an open fire... and more couch seating, but it was still a nice cosy place to spend the evening.

The Menu

Lots of interesting entrees were on offer, and the mains were mostly well known pub staples. I was a bit worried that I had talked up the food too much to my wife (but I wasn't the only one that had said how good the place was...).... but pub food staples can be bad... or really well done! We'll see...

My wife and I had thought about getting the special Swordfish that was on offer... or the fish and chips. But then the both of us thought that we were just too far away from the coast... and we would opt for something more land based!

In a bit of a departure from the norm, my wife ordered the burger... and I have to say, this was definitely one of the better burgers that I have tasted! A good rissole with proper meat and not just weird slimy offcuts... and perfect chips! Yum!

Meanwhile, I had opted for the pub standard... the Chicken Schnitzel.... and oh my gosh, this was HANDS DOWN THE BEST CHICKEN SCHNITZEL I have ever had! This was actually a proper piece of chicken breast... with a nice crispy crumbed and herbed exterior!

... and that apple cider in the corner, a local offering... also one of the better ones that I have had! I'll be ordering a batch from them pretty soon!

... and a nice little passionfruit panna cotta to round out the meal, just enough for a share!

With that, we retired to the bar room and had ourselves a nice little nightcap!

The Experience

Well... after talking up the food so much, my wife was not at all disappointed! Great food, but at city prices... but much better quality than some of the city offerings! The staff were also not as pushy as city places, and we could just take our time to eat, talk, and drink... and not be disturbed at all!

Perfect place, and if you are on the road near Yass... make sure to drop by and get yourself a great feed! You won't regret it!
