It does seem somewhat odd, but some of the best coffees that I've had have been in the light industrial areas of Australia! I guess, if you really really think about it... it isn't quite as weird as you might expect, seeing as the cafes need to have a central place to buy their special coffee beans from, and those wholesale and self-roasting places are going to be located in the cheaper rental of the light industrial areas.
... and so it was with Jindebah Coffee, in the light industrial area of Mitchell in Canberra. A place that is mostly auto shops and earthwork supplies! And this coffee roasting place!
The Space
But they do have a very nice layout for the retail facing part of the cafe... it does remind you a bit of a retro styling, and there was lots of room and comfortable seating when I visited.
... a tiny amount of greenery, a bit token... but it is there!
The Menu
The menu is quite limited... this is more of a coffee place than a proper cafe/restaurant. There are a few cakes in the display cabinet, and if you are lucky, there might be a few pies in the warmer... but there is no set menu or anything like that. If it is there, you can order it... otherwise, there is nothing! Except the coffee...
The Food
I was lucky on this particular day, there was a single pie left in the warmer... a regular beef mince pie. Actually surprisingly good, but lacking in anything in the way of sides... no salad, no chips... just the pie! Well, I did get a sauce packet though!
... and then the real reason why I dropped in... the coffee! It was pretty good as well! An unusual taste from the beans I think... these places have quite a range of bean styles and tastes... and so, you will likely get something that has more character than what you get at the supermarket. I did like it, but I hadn't really specified what sort of bean to use... I just left it up to the barista.
The Experience
Jindebah Coffee is a bit out of the way for a regular visit... and we do have nice cafes near us that prepare some pretty stunning coffees as well... however, we do often find ourselves in the Mitchell area for kids stuff, landscaping supplies, and auto stuff... and so, we will have lots of reasons to end up visiting this place for a quick coffee!
I did like the ambience of the place, and the staff are happy to just leave you in peace... and if you need to kill time whilst your car is being serviced, they are more than happy to let you sit after you have finished your coffee.
Definitely a place to return back to... and much better than the other place that I was using to kill time. My wife will also complain less about me smelling like a grease pit afterwards as well...
