Here I show you a small selection of sights of the world cultural heritage Mérida. For centuries, Mérida was an important economic, military and cultural center until the fall of the Roman Empire. Mérida is the capital of the autonomous region of Extremadura in the southwest of Spain. The city belongs to the province of Badajoz and has about 59,000 inhabitants. Since December 1993, Mérida has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mérida this city has captured me ... so many well-preserved buildings from the Roman Empire .... one day's stay is not enough to enjoy this city.

The Anfiteatro de Mérida was in the year 8 BC Inaugurated in Chr. Here gladiator fights and battles with wild animals took place. The amphitheater offered space for 15,000 to 20,000 spectators. The lower audience ranks have been preserved but the top two have been demolished (quarry). The shape of the arena is elliptical. The amphitheater is next to the Teatro Romano and is a very well-preserved ruin.

Together with the Teatro Romano, the amphitheater provides an impressive insight into Roman culture. The conservation status is very good and provides a good insight into life in ancient times.

For centuries, the Teatro Romano de Mérida was hidden ... until in 1910 the excavations were started.

The Teatro Romano with its very well preserved Roman monument is very impressive and one feels transported back several centuries. It was inaugurated around 15 BC and could accommodate up to 6,000 spectators.

The arcuate arrangement of the seats allows an unobstructed view of the stage.

The originals of the statues erected here are in the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano in Mérida.

The Teatro Romano is part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, a fascinating collection of ancient buildings and other monuments and ruins. It is located in the city center and is well worth seeing. In summer, the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida takes place, in which works by Plato, Homer, Sophocles and others are performed ... this spectacle must be very impressive ... I was unfortunately here at the wrong time of year.

In addition to my photos, I also found a very nice video on YouTube ...which I have attached for better intuition.

The Museo Nacional de Arte Romano de Mérida is also highly recommended, with Roman remains from the theater and finds from a Roman dwelling house. You can see tombstones, ceramics and glass, coins, sculptures, mosaics and paintings.

I will visit this city again and next time I will stay longer ... to get to know the modern Mérida... with all its nice tapas bars and restaurants and nightlife, of course.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed the post...

I wish you all a wonderful weekend

Enjoys it
