My odyssey

Now I am sitting at home in quarantine due to the coronavirus epidemic. Since at such times there can be no talk of any travels, there is an opportunity to recall the past tides. One of these trips was a big tour of Greece.

It is a very beautiful country and the trip was amazing. Therefore, today I will begin the story of what I liked in this magnificent country.

Arrival in Greece began with a flight from Moscow to Thessaloniki. There, right at the airport, I rented a car and drove to the hotel. I took a small, compact car, in the hope that it would help in case of parking difficulties and of course, that the rental was cheaper.

But when I entered the center of Thessaloniki, I realized that I could not avoid parking problems. Cars were parked generally everywhere along all the streets, even there are signs that prohibit parking. This I have not seen anywhere else.

We arrived in the city after lunch. While they were looking for a hotel, while they were checking in, it was already evening. We decided to go for a walk around the city, to see the main attractions. At the same time - solve the problem with parking. I found parking only paid. The parking attendant took the keys and began to park the cars, as if playing Tetris.

And we went to the embankment to inspect the so-called White Tower.

Thessaloniki is a port city on the coast of Thermaikos Bay in the Aegean Sea. We went through the streets directly to the sea. Between the big houses and the sea there was only a small road and a narrow pedestrian promenade.

For me it was new and very unusual. Sunset over the sea and planes flying overhead, taking off and landing at the airport of Thessaloniki.

That was April. It was warm when you were in the sun and cool when you were in the shade, but the smell of the sea and the sensation of the beginning of an adventure did not leave for a second.

We walked around the White Tower, examined the monument to Alexander the Great, walked through the streets. Thessaloniki seemed an interesting place filled with history and modernity.

Everything is mixed up here. Many different people and many different cultures.

All together creates the amazing world of Greece.

  • Ottoman fortress and former prison, which hosts an interactive exhibition on urban history. The White Tower is the most famous and recognizable landmark in Thessaloniki. You can say the symbol of the city. The construction is located on the shores of the Thermal Gulf and has 34 meters in height, 22.7 meters in diameter and 70 meters around the perimeter. On each of the six floors there is a central room with a diameter of 8.5 meters, connecting with small rooms around the perimeter. Over the centuries-old history, it has changed its name more than once: the Bloody Tower, the Lion, the Janissaries and the White.
