Last night, October 9th, I found myself at a bar table with M.B., known to his friends as "Mad Bro". My recorder was on: almost an hour of conversation, between beers, pizza, loud music and people coming and going. It wasn't an interview, and it certainly wasn't a quiet satsang. It was a real discussion, heated at times, the kind where two friends disagree and have no intention of pretending otherwise.
I listened to it all again, and here are the themes we threw at each other. I have left out the personal stories of other people we talked about: they are not mine to tell.
🔥 Anger and responsibility
We started from a painful story involving people we both know, a story of old wounds and grief that was never worked through. And from there came the big question of the evening: when someone touches what is most sacred to you (a mother, the memory of someone you have lost), how responsible are you for the way you react?
For M.B. there are things that must not be touched, and whoever touches them must accept the consequences. For me, the reaction always remains ours: we can understand it, but that doesn't mean we justify it. "I understand, but I don't justify."
The funny thing is that each of us saw anger in the other. "It's pure anger, and you don't want to see it", I told him. And he answered with the same coin. Maybe we were both right.
🗡️ The little Judas inside us
At some point the talk moved to the apocryphal gospels, and a sentence came out that I want to keep: "There is a little Judas that we all embody, every day. Even with ourselves: we betray ourselves."
Judas is not only the one who hurts you. He is also the voice inside us that betrays what we know is right. The point is to recognise him, and to choose consciously.
💣 The minefield
Another image: if you step on a mine, it explodes. Simple. "So what should I do, become a conscientious objector and stop walking on mines?"
Life is full of other people's wounds buried just below the surface. We can't avoid walking, but we can learn to watch where we put our feet.
🪞 The mirror
Mad Bro has a clear idea of his role: "I am your mirror. I am the cop of your soul." According to him, he shows me what I don't see, so that I can work on it.
I accept the mirror, but a mirror works both ways: what you see in me, I also see in you. And this, perhaps, is the most precious gift of friends who don't flatter us.
🌱 From conventional to natural land
In the middle of the arguments there was also room for the farm. The next load will be spread by my neighbour's tractor, and I explained once again what we are doing at Ca' Paradiso: a transition from conventional agriculture to natural agriculture. It takes time, patience and a lot of explaining, to others and to ourselves.
🎶 Piero Ciampi and the music
Between one argument and the next, music. We listened to Piero Ciampi, the poet-songwriter from Livorno, damned and tender, and the name of Sri Aurobindo popped up as well. And yes, we also argued about the music, because the volume was too loud for some and too low for others. 😄
✨ "I am already in Paradise"
Towards the end, a phrase that made us both laugh: "If you're in a hurry to get to Paradise, I'm already in Paradise." For someone who lives at Ca' Paradiso, it was impossible not to say it.
The evening ended as it should: a round of beers paid, a pizza, a hug and a "goodnight, bro". Still friends, still in disagreement on a few things. And that's fine: true friendship is not being on the same side, but being able to sit at the same table even when you aren't.
And you? How do you react when someone touches what is most dear to you?
Ancora amici, ancora in disaccordo su qualche cosa.
