Deep in the mountains of Pindus National Park is the village of Vovousa. This is one of the smallest traditional villages of Zagorochoria, a historical region of Northern Greece known for its magnificent natural beauty.

I visited Vovousa during a trip to Zagorochoria last summer. Let me share some pictures this beautiful mountain village.

I arrived in the village about the middle of the day, left my car in the square and took a little walk.

During the Second World War, Vovousa was burned, then rebuilt and now looks like a new one. By tradition, everything in Vovousa is built of stone and wood. Currently, the village has a population of about one hundred people.

The Aoos river, one of the largest rivers in Zagoroсhoria, originates in the vicinity of Vovousa. The village is located on both banks. According to some sources, the name of the village is directly related to the name of the river.

The riverbanks are connected by an incredibly beautiful bridge. This single-arch stone bridge was built in 1748.

You can see the panorama of the bridge here.

At the bridge.

I crossed the river and went further down a cozy cobbled street.

One of the few well-preserved old houses.

Village fence and a gazebo for the well.

In old Russian villages you can find exactly the same fences.

St. George's Church, built in 1814.

My walk ended near this church in about an hour. I sat for a while in the shade of the trees and went back to the car.

Vovousa is a great place for lovers of hiking and is the best suited for relaxing away from civilization.

I spent a little more than an hour in the village, but would like to stay for a couple of days. I should visit Vovousa again. In winter, for instance.

Thank you for walking with me!
