When you think you have found a quiet spot on Jurmo, then the world comes to stay.

Jurmo is a small island connected by a small ferry (Lossi) from Åra. If you are looking for nothing to do apart from walking the dog, bird watching or watching the world go by Jurmo is going to suit you. The main language used on the island even though it is a part of Finland 🇫🇮 is Swedish, however Finnish and English is widely used.

There are lots of international tourists on the island so English can be heard all the time. We have stayed here for 3 days. 2 days in the islands hostels camping area and one day wild camping.

The hostel camping

For 17€ a night I think it was good value for money. We were the only motorhome on the island so there was lots of room. We also had the use of the kitchen, shower room, toilet and living room in the hostel. Water is very short on the island so it is difficult to get our water tank filled up.

On the whole, we have had a very enjoyable stay in the Jurmo hostel camping area. We just made food, drunk beer and watched life pass by.

Wild camping on Jurmo

There are a few locations that are good for wild camping, however Jurmo is a small island so nowhere is too far away from runners, cyclists or hikers.

This is not surprising because the view from our motorhome was amazing.

Fortunately, as the evening came in we were alone and was able to enjoy the peaceful moments to ourselves.

Conclusion

Jurmo is not for everyone. While on the island we met other travellers who had decided not to bring their motorhomes. I am guessing it was because they felt the roads were too small.

As for the ferry, we didn't realise until we were on the island that we needed to book the ferry. Unfortunately, the ferryman does not speak English or Finnish, only Swedish. However, the staff in the café are very helpful if you ask them to speak to him for you.

On the whole a lovely experience and likely to return.
