The cathedral is located on the top of St. Peter's Hill, and if you come to Brno by train, you can't miss it. When you leave the station, just turn your head to the left and up.
In the 11th century, a small Romanesque church was built on the site of the cathedral. The church was enlarged and rebuilt several times in Gothic and Baroque styles. The present appearance is the result of a reconstruction between 1901 and 1909 in the neo-Gothic style.
The church was badly damaged during the siege of Brno by the Swedes, and there is a well-known legend from that time. It is said that one day the Swedish general Torstenson gave the order to take Brno within twelve hours. On that day, however, the people of Brno rang the noon bell at eleven, which caused confusion with the Swedish command and Brno defended itself. A legend doesn't have to be true, it just has to be nice. And to this day, noon is rung at 11 o'clock in the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul.
