Mértola, a village that oozes history in every corner, keeping, in addition to its historic core (Villa Velha), other areas that complement its identity, such as the Vila Nova region. Although less mentioned, this part of the town represents an interesting counterpoint to medieval Mértola, offering a more modern perspective, showing how people adapted and expanded outside the old walls.

Mértola, uma vila que emana história em cada recanto, guardando, além do seu núcleo histórico (vila velha), outras zonas que complementam a sua identidade, como a zona da Vila Nova. Embora menos mencionada, esta parte da Vila representa um contraponto interessante à da Mértola medieval, oferecendo uma perspectiva mais moderna, mostrando como as pessoas se adaptaram e se expandiram para fora das antigas muralhas.
Vila Nova emerged to meet population growth and the need to expand Mértola's housing and commercial spaces. Located in a wider and easily accessible area, it contrasts with the old core, where the narrow streets and medieval layout persist. In this area, there are more recent buildings, commercial establishments and services that serve the population.

A Vila Nova surgiu para responder ao crescimento populacional e à necessidade de expandir os espaços habitacionais e comerciais de Mértola. Situada numa área mais ampla e de fácil acesso, contrasta com o núcleo antigo, onde as ruas estreitas e o traçado medieval perduram. Nesta zona, encontram-se construções mais recentes, estabelecimentos de comércio e serviços que servem a população.
Walking through Vila Nova, we quickly realized that, despite its more modern architecture, the connection with the historical and cultural environment of Mértola remains strong. The buildings maintain their aesthetics, with the typical white of Alentejo and the traditional characteristics of the houses. The simple facades, internal courtyards and the presence of small gardens and vegetable gardens reveal continuity with traditions, even in the context of more recent urbanization.

Ao percorrer a Vila Nova, percebemos rapidamente que, apesar da sua arquitetura mais moderna, mantém-se forte a ligação com o ambiente histórico e cultural de Mértola. Os edifícios mantêm a estética, com o branco típico do Alentejo e as características tradicionais das casas. As fachadas simples, os pátios interiores e a presença de pequenos jardins e hortas revelam uma continuidade com as tradições, mesmo no contexto de uma urbanização mais recente.
It is here that many residents gather for daily activities, far from the tourist hustle and bustle of the historic center. Here we find markets, cafes and small establishments that are frequented mainly by those who live here. This environment offers us a more authentic perspective on people's daily lives.

É aqui que muitos moradores se reúnem para atividades do quotidiano, longe da agitação turística do centro histórico. Aqui encontramos mercados, cafés e pequenos estabelecimentos que são frequentados maioritariamente por quem cá vive. Este ambiente oferece-nos uma perspectiva mais autêntica sobre o dia a dia das pessoas.
There are also spaces dedicated to leisure and social interaction, with green areas and parks that invite moments of rest and contemplation. These spaces are particularly important, as they offer an environment of rest and coexistence. It is in this area that some cultural activities and events also take place throughout the year, which include everything from popular festivals to small shows and fairs, integrating elements of local culture with new artistic expressions.

Existem também espaços dedicados ao lazer e ao convívio social, com áreas verdes e parques que convidam a momentos de descanso e contemplação. Estes espaços são particularmente importantes, pois oferecem um ambiente de descanso e convivência. É nesta zona que se realizam também algumas atividades culturais e eventos ao longo do ano, que incluem desde festas populares até pequenos concertos e feiras, integrando elementos da cultura local com novas expressões artísticas.
Despite its location outside the historic walls, Vila Nova de Mértola is not dissociated from the village's heritage. On the contrary, many of the urban and development projects in this area have been carried out in order to preserve the balance with the old nucleus, respecting architectural and cultural traditions. The harmonious integration of Vila Nova with the surrounding landscape and with historic Mértola is proof of the care with which the town's growth has been guided.

Apesar da sua localização fora das muralhas históricas, a Vila Nova de Mértola não está dissociada do património da vila. Pelo contrário, muitos dos projetos urbanísticos e de desenvolvimento desta área têm sido realizados de forma a preservar o equilíbrio com o núcleo antigo, respeitando as tradições arquitetônicas e culturais. A integração harmoniosa da Vila Nova com a paisagem envolvente e com Mértola histórica é uma prova do cuidado com que o crescimento da vila tem sido orientado.
Furthermore, it serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the nature around Mértola, with easy access to trails and paths that take us to the Guadiana River. For those who enjoy hiking and outdoor activities, this area offers greater proximity to nature, allowing you to explore the natural settings that surround Mértola. From here we can reach routes that reveal panoramic views over the town and the Guadiana valley.

Além disso, funciona como ponto de partida ideal para explorar a natureza envolvente de Mértola, com fácil acesso a trilhos e caminhos que nos levam até ao rio Guadiana. Para quem gosta de caminhadas e atividades ao ar livre, esta zona oferece uma proximidade maior com a natureza permitindo explorar os cenários naturais que circundam Mértola. Por aqui podemos alcançar percursos que revelam vistas panorâmicas sobre a vila e o vale do Guadiana.
In short, the Vila Nova area in Mértola is an area that offers a different, but complementary, view of what the town has to offer. It is a place where one can observe the village's adaptation to current needs, without losing respect for its cultural and historical roots.
