I went to Campeche to see friends and to celebrate the "Day of the Dead" together in a hut that my friend and his wife's parents are building near their ranch.　And as I wrote in my previous blog, we cooked a traditional Mayan dish called "cochinita pibil", which has been made since the Mayan period.　Cochinita pibil is a pie-like food made of chicken and corn dough in an oven made by digging a hole in the ground.　It is baked and steamed in the ground overnight, and then opened and removed by everyone.

友達に会いにカンペチェに行き、「死者の日」のお祝いの為、友人夫妻のご両親が経営する牧場の近くに建てている小屋でみんなで行きました。　そして、先のブログで書いたように、Cochinita pibilというマヤ時代から作られている、マヤの伝統料理を作りました。　Cochinita pibil　は地面に穴を掘って作ったオーブンの中に鶏肉とトウモロコシの生地で作ったパイの様な食べ物です。　一夜中地面で焼き蒸すのですが、それを皆で開けて取り出しました。

This "Day of the Dead" celebration was a festival celebrated by family and relatives, and the cochinita pibil eaten there was also a dish prepared and cooked together by everyone.　The work of digging out the cochinita pibil buried in the ground was quite difficult, and everyone, led by the father, was assigned a role to play in digging up the buried food.　If the soil covered the food, even a little, it would ruin the dish, so everyone worked together to gently remove the blue sheet covering.

この、「死者の日」のお祝いは家族や親戚一同でお祝いするお祭りで、そこで食べられる Cochinita pibil　もまた、みんなで一緒に準備し作る料理でした。　地面に埋めた Cochinita pibil　を掘り出す作業は結構大変で、お父さんを中心にみんなが各々の役割を与えられ、埋められた料理を掘り起こしました。　土が料理にかからないように、そーっとバナナの葉っぱを取り除きました。　少しでも土をかぶってしまうと、せっかく作った料理が台無しになってしまうので、みんなで協力し合ってそーーっとブルーシートのカバーを取りました。

After digging out the cochinita pibil together, we all took a short rest, probably from exhaustion, and my friend's wife's mother made us sweet cocoa.　Cacao nuts seem to be famous in Mexico, and the cocoa that mom always made for us contained a lot of polyphenols and caffeine.　The sweet cocoa made by mom really took away the fatigue. The cocoa mom made for me was a really good memory.　I wish I could drink it again when I go back to Campeche.

After drinking cocoa to cheer up, we all roasted marshmallows and ate them together.　My friend is from the U.S., and I wondered if it was American culture to roast marshmallows, and my friend carefully taught his nephew and niece how to roast marshmallows to make them delicious.　As my friend said, if you place the marshmallow a little farther away from the fire and roast it slowly, you can get a really crispy outside and a deliciously melt-in-your-mouth marshmallow. Well, indeed, he was right!!

ココアを飲んで元気になった後、みんなでマシュマロを焼いて食べました。　友人はアメリカ出身で、マシュマロを焼いて食べるのはアメリカ文化なのか友人がどの様に焼いたら美味しく焼けるか、友人の甥っ子と姪っ子に丁寧に教えていました。　実際に友人が言ったように、直接火にあてず、すこし遠いところにマシュマロを置いて、ゆっくり焼くと本当に外はカリっと焼けて、中はとろーりとした美味しい焼きマシュマロが出来ました。

Cochinita pibil をみんなで掘り出し、その疲れからか少し休憩しているとお母さんが甘いココアを作ってくれました。　メキシコではカカオの実が有名の様で、このお母さんがいつも作ってくれたココアはポリフェノールやカフェインがたくさん含まれているのか、少し疲れていてもお母さんのココアを飲むとすぐに元気になりました。　お母さんの作ってくれたココア、本当にいい思い出になりました。　またカンペチェに行ったら飲みたいなぁ。

Have you ever slept in a hammock before?

Have you ever spent the night in a hammock?　I had napped in a hammock before, but this was the first time in my life that I had spent the night in a hammock.　My previous experience of napping in a hammock was in Belize when I traveled there. Now that I think about it, I realize that the Yucatan Peninsula and the region seem to have hammocks as a real part of life.　The hut that was built next to the ranch also had a separate hut, but everyone had to sleep in a hammock except the children, and for the first time in my life, I also had to spend the night in a hammock.

Since this was the first time in my life that I was going to sleep in a hammock, my friend was very considerate and let me use a slightly larger hammock.　Sleeping in a hammock was surprisingly comfortable, and although Campeche can be hot and humid even at night, sleeping in a hammock allowed for good ventilation.　Through this experience, I could understand why hammocks are indispensable in this region.

ハンモックで一夜を過ごしたことはありますか？　ハンモックを使って昼寝をしたことは以前にあったのですが、ハンモックを使って一夜を明かすことは人生で初めてでした。　以前、ハンモックで昼寝をした経験も、今思えはベリーズに旅行に行った時で、ユカタン半島やこの地域はハンモックは本当に生活の一部として存在しているようでした。　牧場の隣に作られた小屋も、別途はあるのですが、子供たち以外はみんなハンモックで寝ることになり、わたしも人生初めて、ハンモックで一夜を過ごすことになりました。

人生で初めてハンモックで寝ると言うことで、友人が気を利かせてくれ、少し大きめのハンモックを使わせてくれました。　ハンモックで寝るのは意外にも心地よく、カンペチェは夜でも蒸し暑い日があるのですが、ハンモックで寝ると風通しも良く、とても快適に寝ることが出来ました。　ハンモックがこの地域では欠かせない理由がこの経験を通して理解することが出来ました。

My friend and his wife and children decided to set up a tent and sleep there.　I heard the next day that it got really, really hot in the tent, and I was so glad I decided to sleep in a hammock.　LOL.

友達夫妻と子供たちはテントをたてて、そこで寝ることにしました。　テントの中がめっちゃくっちゃ暑くなったらしく、次の日にその話を聞いて、ハンモックで寝ると決めて本当によかったと思いました。　笑。

Relaxing day and cheese cake

The next day was my friend's birthday and my friend decided he wanted his own cheesecake and made it himself.　His nephew and niece both ate cheesecake for the first time in their lives, and he received the happiest compliment as a cook: "This is the best cake I've ever had!” which was the happiest compliment as a chef, I believe.　It was a really delicious cheesecake, and in the hot weather, the slightly cooled cheesecake was exceptional.　It was delicious!

次の日は友人の誕生日で、友人は自分でチーズケーキが食べたいと思い立ち自分でチーズケーキを作りました。　彼の甥っ子も姪っ子も人生で初めてチーズケーキを食べたようで、「今まで食べたケーキの中で一番おいしい！」という、料理人として一番うれしい誉め言葉をもらっていました。　本当に美味しいチーズケーキで、暑い天候の中、少し冷えたチーズケーキは格別でした。　おいしかったなぁ～。

It was the first time in my life that I slept in a hammock, and it was the most comfortable experience I had had in a long time, and I was hooked on the idea of sleeping in a hammock.　The next day was free for each of us to spend our time as we pleased, but I took my hammock under a papaya tree and took a nap there.　It really felt good to nap in the sunlight through the trees, and I was able to sleep soundly.　Hammocks seem to have been an important item for the Mayan civilization, and it seems that hammocks have been used since ancient times.　I decided that I would definitely buy a hammock when I return to Sweden.

ハンモックで人生で初めて寝るという経験をし、これほどまでに心地よい経験と言うのは久々の経験で、わたしにとってハンモックで寝ると言うことにドはまりしました。　次の日はめいめいが自由に時間を過ごしたのですが、わたしはハンモックをパパイヤの木の下ではって、そこで昼寝をしました。　本当に木漏れ日の中の昼寝は気持ちがよくて、ぐっすりと眠ることが出来ました。　ハンモックはマヤ文明にとって大切なアイテムの様で、昔からハンモックが使われていたようです。　絶対にスウェーデンに帰る時はハンモックを買って帰ると決めました。

Visiting a dog grave and offered flowers

I visited the grave of my friend's beloved pet, Ginger the dog.　He had been a pet since he lived in the U.S., and it seems he came to Mexico with Ginger.　He became ill and passed away, and Ginger's grave is at the ranch.　We went to a nearby store to buy an offering, and then we all visited the grave together.　In Mexico, it seems that marigold flowers are offered at the grave.　It seems that the spirits are also guided by the bright colors of the marigolds and come to this world on the "Day of the Dead" to spend time with everyone.

I met a friend in the U.S. and then we met again in Mexico like this.　In my long life, we may meet again in Japan or Sweden next.　I thought that good friends enrich my life.

友人の大切なペットであった、犬のGingerちゃんのお墓参りに行きました。　アメリカで住んでいた時からのペットで、メキシコにもGingerと一緒に来たようです。　体調を壊し、亡くなってしまったのですが、そのGingerのお墓が牧場にあります。　近所の店まで行って、お供え物を買って、その後、みんなで一緒にお墓参りに行きました。　メキシコではお墓に、マリーゴールドのお花をお供えするようです。　マリーゴールドの鮮やかな色に霊も導かれ、「死者の日」にはこちらの世界に来て、みんなと時間を過ごすようです。

アメリカで友人に出会い、そして、この様にメキシコで再会しました。　長い人生の中、次は日本やスウェーデンで再会するかもしれません。　良い友人は人生を豊かにしてくれると思いました。
