It's Sunday and although I am not a church goer, it seems like it is appropriate to share these photos of Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago today.
Dedicated on November 21, 1875, Holy Name Cathedral replaced the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Church of the Holy Name, which were destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
You can see how the city has grown up around the cathedral in the past 150 years.
A cornerstone inscription still bears faint indications of bullet marks from the murder of North Side Gang member Hymie Weiss who was killed in front of the church in 1926.
Visiting on a weekday was the perfect time to appreciate the architectural beauty and historical significance.
The interior is beautiful, grand, and a sanctuary from the busy world that is happening just outside it's doors. The gorgeous wood and lovely stained glass windows are worth a visit to see.
