Welcome to San Cristobal de Las Casas, a vibrant and culturally rich city. Join me on an exciting journey as we delve into the fascinating history, indulge in delicious cuisine, and immerse ourselves in the festive atmosphere of this enchanting destination
Independence Holidays Celebration
I was fortunate enough to visit during the lively Independence holidays. The streets were adorned with colorful decorations, and an infectious energy filled the air. It was a perfect timing to get to know some of the culture and experience firsthand the vibrant festivities.
The main square, known as EL Zocalo, was transformed into a hub of excitement. Locals and tourists alike gathered here to witness captivating performances by dancers, listen to live music, and indulge in delicious street food. Nevertheless the atmosphere remained calm, overall.
Exploring San Cristobal de Las Casas during this festive period, I that the joyous spirit and unity was contagious, making it an unforgettable trip
Museum, street walks and other visits
San Cristobal de Las Casas is not only known for its vibrant celebrations but also for its rich history and cultural heritage. To delve deeper into these aspects, I decided to visit the Na Bolom museum. Located within a beautiful colonial building, that used to be home to explorer Frans and Gertrude Blom. This museum serves as a cultural studies center. The museum houses a collection of artifacts, including a video library, photographs, textiles, masks, and pottery. Exploring the beautifully preserved rooms allowed me to step back in time and gain a deeper understanding of what life might have felt for archeologist Frans and photographer and conservationist Trudy.
Another of the things you can indulge in during your visit to this beautiful town is street art. And I don't mean only tags, there are many beautiful mural pieces alongside with graffiti tags, stencils, stickers and all of it melting with the diverse colors of each house color. Each one telling a story, speaking about gmo's or the Zapatistas, or the flora and fauna of the area.
As I wandered through places and streets, I couldn't help but appreciate the dedication that many individuals have had in preserving history. And also of how many people have had the courage to share their art, their own journey with the rest of us.
The weather and streets offered nice strolls. All the homes as is usual in Latin-American are painted according to the owners' desire. This offers a mosaic look and ever changing color palette. And although you might think it crazy it all somehow blend together in the most harmonious way.
Food Delights
No travel experience is complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and San Cristobal de Las Casas certainly didn't disappoint in this regard. The city is a food lover's paradise, offering a wide array of flavors and culinary delights to satisfy every palate.
One dish that you absolutely must try during your visit are tacos. These traditional Mexican delicacies are made from masa (corn dough) tortillas which are topped with various ingredients such as meat, onion, tomato, jalapeno and delicious spicy sauces served on the side. I had the pleasure of sampling different types of tacos, each bursting with unique flavors and accompanied by delicious salsas. My favorite ones are of cochinita, which is pork meat
We also tried to delicious tlacoyos. This dish is also tortilla based and is served with green peas, nopal (cactus), and you can choose from fava bean or black corn paste or cheese. Topped of by a delicious green or red sauce. The place we went to was "La Tlacoyeria" and at this place I tried the less spicy sauce of the whole trip. It was amazing and so mild in comparison to the majority of the other sauces I was served. Served on a thick and oval shaped tortilla and with pickled onions, it's a true taste sensation that will leave you craving more.
