Today my review is about one nice town, which is the last in French Riviera before the Italian border. Therefore, Italian speech is already heard more here than French, and the town itself is already more like Italian. It's called Menton. This is a very cozy resort town with a delightful beach, picturesque streets of the old town, immersed in greenery and flowers.
Introduction of Menton city
In the summer, Menton turns, on the one hand, into a lively resort, but on the other hand, in my opinion, Menton is not as pretentious and noisy as Monaco, Cannes or Nice. Until 1861, it was part of the Principality of Monaco, came under the control of Napoleon III at the request of its inhabitants, and was transferred to France by Charles III to recognize the independence of Monaco. In addition, if silence and tranquility are important to you, then I can say that Menton is a fairly calm place to relax.
Capital of lemons
First, I would like to tell you about what personally struck me the most in this city. Before I went to Menton, I knew that it was called the capital of lemons, but I did not know why. Subsequently, I learned that Menton is the city of the land of citrus fruits.
This city, located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, is called the capital of lemons, although some consider this an exaggeration. In any case, it is lemons that are considered the symbol of Menton, its brand and pride. In fact, the tradition of growing lemons goes back centuries.
Legend of Menton
There is an interesting legend in Menton. When Adam and Eve were expelled from Paradise, Eve took a lemon with her. Adam was very afraid of God's wrath and asked her to throw away the fruit. However, along the way, Eve could not find any place beautiful enough to be worthy of this amazing fruit. Finally, they came to the city of Menton. When they saw Garavan Bay, Eva realized that these places reminded her of nothing more than a lost Paradise, so they decided to plant a lemon in this amazing corner.
Now, the Lemon Festival is held in Menton every year. Each city says goodbye to winter in its own way, welcoming spring with the start of Lent. Menton, which has been one of the most important lemon producers in all of Europe since the 15th century, arranges these very farewells of winter very colorfully. The whole city is painted in yellow-orange tones. Bright colorful carts and amazing sculptural compositions built from citrus fruits are being built. This beauty and the celebration itself takes about 140-150 tons of lemons and oranges.
Despite the fact that, unfortunately, during my stay in Menton, there was not this holiday, a walk around the city also proved that the lemon is indeed a symbol of this city, because the prevailing color of most of the streets and houses of this city was yellow with various shades.
Actually speaking, this color fits harmoniously like nowhere in this amazing French city, the climate of which is very mild and pleasant. The numerous parks and gardens of Menton exist only thanks to such a favorable climate.
Embankment of Menton
We went to the embankment of Menton and found ourselves in the realm of "all shades of blue": sea, sky, mountains. If you look at the sea, then on the left hand stretches a picturesque bay with a sandy beach and an extensive parking of boats and yachts - this is the port of Menton.
The difference between the beach of Nice caught my eye and it is not only pleasant soft sand, but also awnings with benches, and the presence of greenery, and a cafe right on the beach.
To the right of this delightful place, on a ledge of the coastline, there is a tower with the flag of France. This Bastion is a museum of the French artist Jean Cocteau. Cocteau restored the Bastion, decorated the niches, the reception room and the outer walls with pebble mosaics, and the building itself dates back to the 17th century.
Along the beach on the other side of the street stretches a square with a suite of fabulously beautiful multi-colored buildings - this is the Old Town.
Churches of Menton
The Church of the Archangel Michael is visible on the hill. We are heading towards this church.
Interesting from the point of view of inspection, I would also call the building of the Chapel of the White Penitents - this is an architectural monument of the 17th century. The baroque chapel of the building dominates the square called Concepción in the Old Town.
The chapel of the White Penitents, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was erected in Menton in 1687. The white penitents, for the most part, were local farmers, and they began the construction of this chapel outside the walls of the ancient fort. Construction was carried out on a high hill. Today, this tall baroque chapel is the second largest church in Menton.
The very austere interior of this chapel is noteworthy - its walls are covered with red satin, its austerity unusually contrasts with the beauty of the altar made of marble. As you can see, this building, like many other buildings in Menton, is made in yellowish-orange and red hues.
Beaches of Menton
Since Menton is located in the very south of France, it is clear that it combines the features of both a beach holiday and a seaport. The port is really amazing!
As for the beaches of Menton, there are a considerable number of both pebbly and sandy beaches. The beaches here are clean and very well maintained, each beach is equipped with showers. For many tourists, it will be important to know that the latest state of the art in the form of an underground treatment system ensures the purest sea waters in Menton.
Streets of the city
As for the fact that orange and lemon trees grow in Menton, as well as palm trees and mimosas, I think it’s understandable that this is not at all surprising, because the subtropical climate, coupled with the mild sun, contribute to their rapid growth. I was also impressed by the mountain landscapes, as well as a view of the city from above, from where you can see the bright roofs of houses.
Be sure to walk along the pedestrian streets of the city. The streets and buildings of Menton are beautiful not only because of their lemon tint. At first glance, unremarkable, but endowed with a special charm, they are sure to leave a mark on your soul.

The overall impression of Menton is the sweetest town with a great historical atmosphere, picturesque urban environment and magnificent beaches. In general, the arrival in Menton is simply not capable of disappointing you in any way!

Šiandien apžvelgsiu vieną gražų miestelį, kuris yra paskutinis Prancūzijoje prie Žydrojo kranto prieš Italijos sieną. Todėl itališka kalba čia jau girdima daugiau nei prancūziška, o ir pats miestelis jau labiau primena itališką. Jis vadinasi Mentonas. Tai labai jaukus kurortinis miestelis su žaviu paplūdimiu, vaizdingomis senamiesčio gatvelėmis, paskendusiomis žalumoje ir gėlėse.
Vasarą Mentonas, viena vertus, virsta gyvu kurortu, kita vertus, mano nuomone, Mentonas nėra toks pretenzingas ir triukšmingas kaip Monakas, Kanai ar Nica. Iki 1861 m. miestas priklausė Monako kunigaikštystei, gyventojų prašymu pateko į Napoleono III kontrolę, o Karolis III, pripažindamas Monako nepriklausomybę, perdavė jį Prancūzijai. Nepaisant to, kad, deja, mano viešnagės Mentone metu šios šventės nebuvo, pasivaikščiojimas po miestą taip pat įrodė, kad citrina iš tiesų yra šio miesto simbolis, nes daugumoje šio miesto gatvių ir namų vyravo įvairių atspalvių geltona spalva.
Tiesą sakant, ši spalva kaip niekur kitur harmoningai dera šiame nuostabiame Prancūzijos mieste, kurio klimatas labai švelnus ir malonus. Daugybė Mentono parkų ir sodų atsirado tik dėl tokio palankaus klimato.
Nuvykome į Mentono krantinę ir atsidūrėme "visų mėlynų atspalvių" karalystėje: jūra, dangus, kalnai. Žvelgiant į jūrą, kairėje pusėje plyti vaizdinga įlanka su smėlėtu paplūdimiu ir plačia valčių ir jachtų stovėjimo aikštele - tai Mentono uostas.
Į akis krito skirtumas nuo Nicos paplūdimio - tai ne tik malonus minkštas smėlis, bet ir stoginės su suoliukais, ir žalumos buvimas, ir kavinė pačiame paplūdimyje.
Dešinėje šios žavios vietos pusėje, ant pakrantės atbrailos, stovi bokštas su Prancūzijos vėliava. Šiame bastione įsikūręs prancūzų dailininko Jeano Cocteau muziejus. Cocteau restauravo bastėją, nišas, priimamąjį ir išorines sienas papuošė akmenukų mozaikomis, o pats pastatas datuojamas XVII a.
Palei paplūdimį kitoje gatvės pusėje driekiasi aikštė su pasakiškai gražių įvairiaspalvių pastatų siuita - tai senamiestis.
Ant kalvos matoma Arkangelo Mykolo bažnyčia. Einame šios bažnyčios link.
Įdomiu apžiūros požiūriu taip pat pavadinčiau Baltųjų atgailautojų koplyčios pastatą - tai XVII a. architektūros paminklas. Baroko stiliaus koplyčios pastatas dominuoja senamiesčio Concepción vadinamoje aikštėje.
1687 m. Mentone pastatyta Baltųjų atgailautojų koplyčia, skirta Mergelei Marijai. Baltieji atgailautojai daugiausia buvo vietiniai ūkininkai, kurie šią koplyčią pradėjo statyti už senovinio forto sienų. Statybos vyko ant aukštos kalvos. Šiandien ši aukšta barokinė koplyčia yra antra pagal dydį Mentono bažnyčia.
Įsidėmėtinas labai griežtas šios koplyčios interjeras - jos sienos dengtos raudonu atlasu, griežtumas neįprastai kontrastuoja su marmurinio altoriaus grožiu. Kaip matote, šis pastatas, kaip ir daugelis kitų Mentono pastatų, yra gelsvai oranžinių atspalvių.
Kadangi Mentonas yra pačiuose Prancūzijos pietuose, akivaizdu, kad jame dera ir paplūdimio, ir jūrų uosto ypatybės. Uostas išties nuostabiai gražus!
Mentono paplūdimiuose yra nemažai žvirgždėtų ir smėlėtų paplūdimių. Paplūdimiai čia švarūs ir labai gerai prižiūrimi, kiekviename paplūdimyje įrengti dušai. Daugeliui turistų bus svarbu žinoti, kad naujausia moderniausia požeminė valymo sistema užtikrina švariausią jūros vandenį Mentone.

Būtinai pasivaikščiokite miesto pėsčiųjų gatvėmis. Mentono gatvės ir pastatai gražūs ne tik dėl savo citrininio atspalvio. Iš pirmo žvilgsnio niekuo neišsiskiriantys, tačiau apdovanoti ypatingu žavesiu, jie tikrai paliks pėdsaką jūsų sieloje.
Bendras įspūdis apie Mentoną - tai pats mieliausias miestas su puikia istorine atmosfera, vaizdinga miesto aplinka ir nuostabiais paplūdimiais. Apskritai, atvykus į Mentoną tiesiog neįmanoma jūsų nuvilti!
