I know the Halloween season is over, but... I just visited a delightfully spooky cafe.
Do you believe in mysticism, urban legend, or spirits? This particular cafe has a unique rule: 3 people can't take selfies in front of the mirror in this place. There's even a sign posted next to it that piqued my interest, so my friend mentioned that a sacred heirloom used to sit there, and who knows what might happen if you take a photo near it?
Fortunately, the sacred heirloom has since been moved, and as you see, now it is allowed to take selfies without a care in the world. It doesn't matter if there are three, four, five, or even seven people in the same frame.
The cafe is called Space Roastery 1890, named after the building, which has stood for over 130 years.
You can appreciate their pride in this historic structure when you step inside. Everything inside the place has been preserved beautifully, reflecting the classical Javanese style of that era. The baristas are also dressed traditionally, which adds a more unique touch to this cafe. The only modern touches are their cutting-edge coffee machine and the way they serve their coffee.
Space Roastery has several branches throughout the province and has yet to be known for its trend, which will bring various variants from across Indonesia and overseas. They sell their beans to multiple cafes and coffee shops, packaged cutely with unique flavors that make them stand out from the other roasters in Indonesia.
What truly sets this café apart—especially for coffee lovers—is the experience in front of a large mirror.
They have set up a table where visitors can sample some of the coffees available. At first, I thought the table was meant for a paid cupping experience, but to my surprise, it was completely free! Anyone can stroll up around the table and taste the coffee sampled on it.
From that sampling experience, I came across a very interesting coffee that doesn't last just a few hours from the place called "Lychee Dukun Merapi," which is grown in the foothills of Merapi. I would have never thought this area also produces coffee, but apparently, they do and have a taste of lychee, which is more sour on the note. I ended up buying the Japanese V60 and iced and it was absolutely heavenly.
What's more intriguing? They don't use plastic or paper straws anymore. Instead, they've created edible straws made of cassava and rice flour! I tried one, but I wouldn't recommend it to most people.
As I've mentioned, their coffee is honestly top-notch. They are one of the best in town, and their prices are reasonable. It's like 1-3$ coffee, and their specialty is Freddo-styled iced coffee. They also sell canned coffee freshly brewed with varied beans.
Currently, canned coffee is trendy, and that's why they are also using cutting-edge technology to process the coffee from beans to inside a can.
So, if you find yourself in Yogyakarta and are a coffee lover, check out this fantastic coffee shop!
