In the Wake of Dawn: An Introspective Voyage Across the Sea

February 2024 · 2 min read · San Francisco

We packed our bags the night before and left Mactan Island at 3:30 am. We didn't exactly know what's waiting for us out there, we didn't even prepare an itinerary for the day's trip.

But we traveled anyway, and arrived at the port of Consuelo around 8:00 am.

There's no experience more profound than traveling in silence. Silence both inside and out. As we traveled the seas that day, the azure horizons greeted with thought-provoking scenes. A lone fisherman, surrounded by seas in his early morning grind. Isn't it fascinating how everyone's daily life involves moments of courage, even if we don't always realize it?

I can't imagine going out to sea, pushing my tiny vessel out just as the dawn breaks. In solitude, distant from the coast, where the abundant sea life thrives.

The ferry was filled with people from all walks of life. From foreigners exploring the tropics,  Filipino tourists like us who are looking to unwind and locals who went home for a weekend with family.

I love the scent of instant coffee, the busy conversations of passengers with their soft morning voices and the sight of calm people looking out on the waters, resembling their outward look on the horizons far ahead, on a distant future we all leisurely imagine.

The sun hinted to us a promising day ahead. With the gently spray of ocean mist, and the smell of fresh seas, I can't help but feel excited. Camotes, to me, is home. Not because I once resided in the island, but because of the warm memories I had with the people.
