Late afternoon walks by the river

Late afternoon walks by the river

December 2019 · 2 min read · Bergrivier Local Municipality

Spending some time in the small town where my parents live.

Hubby and I also lived here for a few years so the town is quite familiar to me.

One of my favorite things to do here is to go for a walk by the river.

The little road down by the river is called Bokkom laan... A bokkom is a little fish that is dried and salted and then eaten. It's a well-known delicacy in the area.

Most of the jetties are private jetties and one aren't allowed to walk on them. My dad used to own one lower down in the river but I haven't been there for years

There's still a huge community of local fisherman that fish by hand. They are existance fishermen. They just catch enough for day to day use although some of them sell their excess catch.

Another little fishing boat

Here is where the fish gets processed by hand and sold

I'm not ashamed to say that I'm shit scared of these geese. 😂 I walk circles around them.

A good place to take a breather.

Another jetty hidden in the long grass.

Some birds passing by overhead.

This one belongs to friends of our family. They do daily river trips on their boat that one can join.

A little boat lying forlorn.

Another old building that's been utilized by local fishing families for years and years.

Velddrif is a quaint little town on the West Coast of South Africa. It's mostly a fishing and farming community and nestled between the ocean and the Bergriver. A quaint little town and worth a visit.
