Just recently, I had the pleasure of going to up to Stockholm in Sweden for a quick concert. It was a pretty whirlwind trip, with just a day of rehearsal and a concert the next day before flying back home.
However, it did give me a nice chance to eat out for dinner in Sweden... where the prices are quite surprisingly high!
I had gone around searching for a place to eat right after the rehearsal had finished, but I didn't want to stray too far from the hotel as I was starving... plus, it was late, and I didn't want to be out for too long trying to figure out how to get back!
So, just around the corner, I stumbled into this little Grillhouse, which has the decidedly unmemorable name of "Barbeque Steakhouse and Bar"! I had thought that I had missed the name of the place, but... nope... that really is the name of the restaurant!
The Space
From the outside, the restaurant is hard to miss, with a big red awning and taking up quite a lot of space along the street. There was outdoor seating... but wrong time of the year and day for that this time!
Inside, the decor is pretty understated.... in fact, it is probably a Swedish vision of what an American steakhouse looks and feels like. Having never experienced the American version... well, I guess it is close?
Comfortable seating and a busy atmosphere made for a nice and very casual setting for dinner...
.... however, the seating was altogether TOO CLOSE! As you can see in this photo, the man next to me was seated at a different table and we may as well have been eating together. Likewise on the other side.
Along with the bright lighting... it wasn't the best of table settings... unless you feel like getting quite chatty with the strangers next to you!
The Menu
Well... if you are at a steakhouse, then you would be expecting meats from the grill! .... and the Barbeque Steakhouse (is that SERIOUSLY the NAME?) doesn't dissapoint, with a wide range of red meats... but also fish on offer.
Pizzas on the other hand were unexpected... I'm starting to think that the idea of a Steakhouse might have been a touch corrupted by the time it reached the shores of Sweden!
Rounding out the menu was the wide range of drinks, both alcoholic and otherwise... Some interesting little things that were local to Sweden, but otherwise some fairly stock standard choices otherwise.
The Food
After balking a bit at the prices (and being thankful that the orchestra pays a good per diem for food), I eventually settled on the Grilled Salmon. Sweden is supposed to be better for the fish than the red meats (unless it is deer, I guess...) and so I thought that that would be a better choice.
... and surprisingly enough, it was really quite good! The salmon was deliciously marinated and moist, and the sides were really quite a treat. The salad was unusually good (and the bread as well), with the chips having a firm crunchiness to them. The corn was a little strange to see on the plate... and a touch soggy as well....
The Experience
Well... the staff were really nice and friendly... the food was incredibly quick.... and VERY GOOD!
However, the seating arrangements were terrible... being way too close together (which meant that I was hearing conversations from two tables down the line...) and the lighting was not at all discrete.... So, not really my preferedambience for eating...
Unfortunately, the prices were also high (for a Western European)... but prices in Sweden are generally higher than what I would be used to, and so I don't think it was unusually high for Stockholm.
It was a pleasant dinner (apart from the table seating..), but I think that next time I come, I will try a different place....
