This is an Italian themed restaurant in the very popular Darling Harbour area. My daughter had been here on a previous visit when I was working, and she was really excited to show me it... as she thought it was one of the best places that she had ever eaten at.
Big call... but we went again to try out Fratelli Fresh as a complete family!
The Space
There is a large hall space inside for eating, with ample spacing between tables... but when it gets busy, it can be quite noisy! On the other hand, if you prefer, there is undercover outdoor seating as well... but it is more likely that you will have to book ahead, or drop in a bit earlier than we did!
There are different stations for ordering, but there is also table service as well. For the drinks, it can be easier to just hop up to the bar... especially as the kids and non-alcoholic drinks aren't on the drinks menu.
... and of course, you HAVE to be able to view the desserts in the dessert display area!
The Food
A nice easy garlic bread to start off with. Not too garlicky, and a bit too much butter for me... I tend to use a bit less butter and a bit more garlic. Although, my last one was way too much garlic! Regrets for the next day or two!
My wife chose the Putanesca... she had recently made this, and she tends to refer the non-meat options when we are eating out... also when cooking at home... Anyway this was a beautiful dish, fresh and with a generous helping of capers, basil, olives, and cherry tomatoes. Very clean to eat!
The older daughter chose for a gnocchi pesto... again, cooked just right, with the right amount of chewiness for the potato pillows.
My mother joined us for this dinner, and it was a spicy Diavlo pizza that she opted for. Nice base, fluffy and not at all heavy... and a topping that wasn't over heavy with cheese. Definitely prefer these lighter styles of pizza over the heavy American ones!
We managed to convince the little one that chicken nuggets might not be the best choice for an Italian restaurant... and she had them at lunch anyway. So, she settled upon a kiddies Salami pizza... which she ended up loving as well! Picky eater...
... and finally a pasta with a Wagyu beef ragu... wow, rich and so soft. Past was excellent as well! I have to really learn how to make a slow cooked ragu!
The Experience
Well, I'm not sure that this was the best Italian that I have ever had... but it was pretty decent one anyway! Plus, it didn't cost an arm and leg either... the staff were really friendly, and there was no hurry at all. As a family dining experience, this was a decent option! However, if you are looking to take a new date somewhere... perhaps, not this place!
